Artists-In-Residence
Home of the Arts (HOTA)

Gold Coast, Queensland (2022)

In November 2022, PCPA undertook a two-week residency at Home of The Arts (HOTA) in Gold Coast, Queensland.

This was HOTA’s first artist-in-residency program and we were delighted to participate.

Over the course of two weeks, we set up a working photographic studio in the HOTA gallery, where we had an open-door policy for gallery visitors, as well as facilitating school workshops and public programs.

This residency allowed us to work with and meet members of the Gold Coast art community, fostering new personal and professional relationships with interstate artists and arts workers.

Aims:

  • Engage the Gold Coast Community through photography

  • Offer photography education programs to students and members of the public

  • Engage with gallery visitors and staff

  • Collaborate on photographic exercises with students, members of public and gallery staff

  • Promote photography as a creative and enjoyable art practice

  • Encourage workshop participants to express their creativity and have fun

Outcomes:

  • Engage the Gold Coast Community through photography

  • Encourage workshop participants to use photography as a creative outlet for personal enjoyment and expression

  • Introduce new studio photography practices to high school students and artists

  • Engage participants with the history of the Gold Coast using archive images

  • Introduce the use of archival photography to school students

  • Develop new personal and professional relationships with Gold Coast artists and arts professionals

  • Produce new artworks with workshop participants

  • Promote creative thinking and visual awareness

Using publicly accessible images from the State Library of Queensland’s photography archive, students were encouraged to engage with the Gold Coast of the past by using watercolours, crayons, textas and coloured pencils on the printed images.
